Count your blessings this lent – Week 2

Posted on March 14, 2011 by No Comments

For information on what I am trying to do please see this post. I hope you will consider raising money with me during Lent.

The theme for this week is learning.

Here are the thoughts for the second week:
Monday 14th March
£2.50 will pay for a textbook for two students to share in southern Sudan where Christian Aid partners are supporting schooling for children.
Give 10p for every book you have read since the beginning of this year

Tuesday 15th March
Roughly 16% of the world’s population cannot read or write.
Give 20p for every crossword or sudoku you attempt this week.

NFL lockout

Posted on March 12, 2011 by 1 Comment

Now I’m not going to pretend I properly understand the current pay disputes in the NFL. The sport’s current Collective Bargaining Agreement that decides the split of funds between the sport, the owners and the players has now expired and the owners want a bigger piece of the pie.

From the NFL’s current pot of $9 billion a year the owners currently get $1 billion – this is split between the 32 owners and is hardly spare change. The owners though want this to double to $2 billion. The players though see this as a loss of revenue for them and so are fighting the change. As of Friday night talks had broken down between the NFL and the players and the Owners are looking at imposing a lockout to keep the players out of the team’s facilities.

Count your blessings this Lent – Week 1

Posted on March 9, 2011 by No Comments

For information on what I am trying to do please see this post. I hope you will consider raising money with me during Lent.

Here are the thoughts for the first week:

Wednesday 9 – Ash Wednesday
On average, each person in Britain eats 3kg (6lb) of chocolate every year. In Nicaragua, Christian Aid provides farmers with cocoa seeds that cost 10p each.
Give 10p for every bar of chocolate you have eaten during the past week.

Thursday 10
Each household in Britain throws away an average of 4kg (9lb) of food and drink every week.
Weigh your kitchen rubbish on the bathroom scales and pay 50p for every kg (or 20p for every lb).

Count your blessings this Lent

Posted on March 7, 2011 by No Comments

A couple of years back at Putney Methodist Church around the start of Lent I was drawn towards the Christian Aid Count your Blessings campaign during lent.

As we enter this important time in the Christian calendar I hope that you will join me in raising money for this worthwhile cause. Each week I will post on here the blessings to be counted in the coming week. Feel free to either publicly comment on how much you have raised from the thoughts that they raise or just let me know that you are taking part.

Youtube need to vet their home page content better

Posted on March 6, 2011 by No Comments

You might think that the ability to view content on the internet is a good thing, that TV channels should be placing their programmes on youtube no matter what the content of the programme may be.

You would struggle, however, to convince anyone that it was a good idea for the youtube home page to display an image of a man pleasuring a naked woman with a vibrator as the UK youtube home page is displaying today. The show unsurprisingly is on channel 5 and is called “sex: how to do everything” and I am sure it is very popular amongst teenage boys but it should not have a place on the youtube home page even if it is allowed on the site in the first place.

107%

Posted on February 17, 2011 by No Comments

Back when I started watching Formula One in 1998 there was a rule that if a driver qualified outside of 107% of the pole driver’s time they would not be able to race. That rule happily disappeared over the years due to the competitiveness of the cars taking part.

After last year’s new team’s struggles though the FIA has brought the rule back in again. This made me wonder how such a rule would have affected our karting over the last couple of years. So faced with intermittent internet connection (thanks BT/netgear or whoever is to blame) I decided to find out how many people would have failed to qualify in our three karting races.

Premier League team rankings

Posted on January 28, 2011 by No Comments

A couple of years ago I ranked the then premier league teams in terms of my preference towards them. I thought I would drag up the past and revise that list for the current teams – possibly making it an annual fixture (lucky you).

1. Fulham (=)
2. Arsenal (=)
3. Blackpool (NE)
4. Tottenham (up 3)
5. Liverpool (down 2)
6. Aston Villa (=)
7. Manchester United (up 6)
8. Everton (up 10)
9. West Ham (down 1)
10. Birmingham (NE)
11. Wolverhampton (NE)
12. Stoke (down 3)
13. Sunderland (NE)
14. Bolton (up 3)
15. Wigan (down 4)
16. West Brom (down 4)
17. Blackburn (down 7)
18. Chelsea (down 4)
19. Manchester City (=)
20. Newcastle (=)

Games I’m looking forward to the 1st half of 2011

De Blob 2 – Wii – 25 February
The first de blob game was brilliant. It had a very unique style, the graphical style was great for wii and the sound design was fitting as well. I played through the first game with a rental copy, this time barring any huge issues in the reviews I will buy it on day 1.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn – Wii – 25 February
I put Kirby down in my last list… turns out it only got a 2010 release date in the US and Japan. We schmucks in Europe have to wait till the end of February. Oh well, reviews have been good for this latest kirby game which to me makes it a must buy… Kirby is awesome!

Jonathan’s new voting scheme

Posted on January 18, 2011 by No Comments

So the government are currently tying themselves up in knots about electoral reform. The lib dems and to some extent labour (probably because they lost the election) want a change from the current first past the post system where the candidate in an area with the most votes gets in. The solution that will be voted on is called the Alternative Vote (AV). This system is obviously more complex as voters rank the candidates in order of preference. If a candidate gets more than 50% in the first round gets elected in his constituency. If no candidate has 50% then the candidate with the fewest first round votes is eliminated and the second choices are added on and so on until someone has over 50% of the vote.

Film of the Year

Posted on January 6, 2011 by No Comments

Maybe we are just getting that little bit older but 2010′s films did not particularly hold my attention. There were a few breakout films but the industry seems to be spending far too much time shovelling average products with spangly (and poor) 3d that the actual films themselves are being affected. As such I saw fewer films this year than for about 8 years. Below though are my wife and mines favourites from the year.

Beth:
10. Iron Man 2
9. Shrek Forever After
8. Eat Pray Love
7. The Lovely Bones
6. Knight and Day
5. Harry Potter
4. Death at a Funeral
3. Scott Pilgrim vs the World
2. Inception
1. Toy Story 3
